The 96-times-capped international is the leading goalscorer since the introduction of the Women's Bundesliga in 1990. She topped the scoring charts in six different seasons. Altogether, she struck more than 350 times in the top flight. Her 38 goals in the 1999/2000 season remain a record to this day.

Grings was a complete striker. She was adept at holding up the ball, an accomplished dribbler, two-footed and good in the air, qualities that made her unpredictable for defenders and virtually impossible to keep in check for the entire 90 minutes.

Given her phenomenal goalscoring record, her total of 96 international caps may seem rather modest. A string of serious injuries, however, particularly before major tournaments, prevented her from making more appearances. Taking this into account, her goal return 0f 64 for the national team is all the more remarkable. She left her own special mark at the 2005 and 2009 European Championships, helping Germany to win both tournaments by finishing as leading scorer. Grings was named Women's Player of the Year three times. Only Birgit Prinz has won the award more often.
