Joachim Streich is the most successful goalscorer in the history of East German football. With 229 goals, he became the all-time leading goalscorer in the country’s top flight. His 55 goals for the national team also stand as an all-time record, just as his 102 international caps remain unsurpassed. Having already enjoyed great success at his beloved club Hansa Rostock, Streich’s finest years began following his move to 1. FC Magdeburg in 1975. In the years that followed, the centre-forward secured the title of top scorer in the GDR Oberliga four times, won the FDGB Cup three times and was voted Footballer of the Year twice. His greatest success with the national team came at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where they won the bronze medal. Because of his clinical finishing, he was also known as the “Gerd Müller of the East”. Just a few months after his induction into the German Football Hall of Fame, Joachim Streich passed away at the age of 71. He had already proudly confirmed his attendance at the planned awards ceremony.
The German Football Hall of Fame was established on the initiative of the German Football Museum. In November 2018 and January 2019, leading sports journalists voted for the inaugural men’s and women’s teams. The jury members were asked to nominate their choice of players and managers from German men’s and women’s football. Players who were eligible to play for German national teams and whose playing careers had ended at least five years previously were eligible for nomination. The HALL OF FAME honours the greatest legends of German football in one central location for the first time. It forms part of the permanent exhibition at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. Opened on 1 April 2019, it has become a permanent place of pilgrimage for all football fans. The jury decides annually on further inductees from men’s and women’s football.
