Bärbel Wohlleben discovered her passion for football whilst playing with her three older brothers when she was still of pre-school age. In the early 1970s, she was regarded as the ‘female Beckenbauer’ because she directed her team’s play from the back with great vision and superb technique. As team captain, she led TuS Wörrstadt to victory over Eintracht Erle in the first final of the German Women’s Football Championship in 1974. Wohlleben ensured that this event would be particularly memorable by achieving another first: her spectacular strike, which made it 3–0 at one stage, saw her become the first woman to be awarded the ‘Goal of the Month’ honour by ARD’s Sportschau. In 1978, Wohlleben became German champion once again with SC Bad Neuenahr, before bringing her successful career to a close back home at Spvg. Ingelheim.

She remained loyal to football. Over 40 years later, she is still active as a coach in girls’ football.

        Hall of Fame

The German Football Hall of Fame was established on the initiative of the German Football Museum. In November 2018 and January 2019, leading sports journalists voted to select the inaugural men’s and women’s teams. The jury members were asked to nominate their choice of players and managers from German men’s and women’s football. Players who were eligible to play for German national teams and whose playing careers had ended at least five years previously were eligible for nomination. The HALL OF FAME honours the greatest legends of German football in one central location for the first time. It forms part of the permanent exhibition at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. Opened on 1 April 2019, it has become a permanent place of pilgrimage for all football fans. The jury decides annually on further inductees from men’s and women’s football.
