"Mario Götze made football history in Rio. His 'golden' boot will be a highlight of our exhibition," said museum director Manuel Neukirchner. "The fact that two million euros was also donated for children in need makes it even better. We would like to thank everyone involved - especially Mario Götze and, of course, the anonymous donor."
#bild#During the TV programme Germany coach Joachim Löw expressed his delight with the benefactor's decision to give the boot to the German Football Museum. "It's fantastic because so many football fans are interested in this special boot."
Löw introduced Mario Götze in the 88th minute of the World Cup final in Rio. Seven minutes before the end of extra-time the 22-year-old scored the only goal of the game with a left-foot shot. Germany's fourth World Cup title was in the bag. "It's a special boot for me. It's been a successful promotion for precisely that reason and I'm absolutely delighted that so much money has been raised," said Mario Götze in a live link from a studio in Munich.
Born in Memmingen, Götze moved to Dortmund at the age of six. The Bayern Munich midfielder spent three years at FC Eintracht Hombruch before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2001. Götze made his Bundesliga debut in 2009 and made his international appearance just two years later. From summer 2015 the boot will thus be on show in the city where Mario Götze started his professional career.
The TV fundraiser on the evening of Saturday 6 December raised an impressive total of €16,269,471. During the show celebrity patrons presented projects that support children in need as part of the 'Ein Herz für Kinder' campaign. The gala was broadcast live from the hangar of Berlin's Tempelhof Airport and hosted by Johannes B. Kerner.
