15 September to 10 February 2019 – Special exhibition on the forecourt
, running alongside the major Pink Floyd exhibition at the Dortmunder U
The ‘Dortmunder U’ dedicated a major exhibition to the legendary English pop band Pink Floyd, whose albums such as ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ have shaped the outlook on life of several generations. The German Football Museum joined in with the Pink Floyd exhibition in the neighbourhood and showcased a lesser-known side of the band: the musicians were also keen football fans and players. On the forecourt, museum visitors and passers-by were able to discover these lesser-known aspects of the band through rare photographic material.
“We always had a ball with us; we never forgot it on our tours around the world,” Roger Waters once revealed. This passion found particular expression in the founding of the “Pink Floyd Football Club”, in which some of the band members’ wives were also active as cheerleaders. In their song “Fearless”, the Liverpool fans’ anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” can be heard, even though Waters and Gilmour are said to have been more closely associated with Arsenal FC.
“In any case, alongside music, football seems to have played an important role in bringing them together,” says museum director Manuel Neukirchner, particularly given that, over time, the rivalry between the band’s frontmen, Waters and Gilmour, became increasingly intense.
In the permanent exhibition at the German Football Museum, selected exhibits were linked to key milestones in the band’s 50-year history. This created a fascinating journey through time, allowing visitors to relive not only the soundtrack but also the spirit of their own youth.
The Pink Floyd exhibition at the Dortmunder U and the German Football Museum thus pulled off a successful one-two.
