What can you expect at the German Football Museum? Let me ask you this: do you still remember when you got your first pair of football boots? Your first goal? Your mates standing on your doorstep with the ball tucked under their arms? When it didn’t matter to you whether you were playing in the school playground, on a cinder pitch, in the street or in a field, and you came home late for dinner because you’d been playing football? How you used to wash the grime off your thighs in the bath at night? And how, for once, you were allowed to stay up late to watch a World Cup match?
Do you still remember the first time you looked out over a packed stadium? You do. You can picture it all: Gerd Müller taking that inimitable shot on the turn, Olli Bierhoff scoring the Golden Goal, Germany leading Brazil 5–0 at half-time, a summer in Germany turning into a fairy tale, and Mario Götze set to show the world that he’s better than Lionel Messi. Suddenly, you hear that Rahn has to shoot from deep in the box. Welcome to the exhibition at the German Football Museum – where history comes to life and stories never cease to fascinate.
You can discover all 1,600 exhibits and their history at the German Football Museum
You’ll be immersed in 140 years of German football history. Emotions will well up. Through a piece of fabric bearing the marks of gruelling tackles. Through sounds, voices and cheers. Through unforgettable moments from matches. Through boots still caked with grass. Through trophies that reflect the splendour of great moments. In between, you’ll discover objects that seem unremarkable, yet behind which lie countless stories, both big and small.
You move from one spine-tingling experience, from one great football moment, to the next. Each one can be experienced in all its emotional intensity. Moreover, you’ll come across chapters of football history that give pause for thought and not only awaken memories but keep them alive. Football in times of war, persecution, betrayal and bribery – this, too, forms part of the all-encompassing view of our sport. Football from different angles. With a perspective that looks beyond the horizon. This is football.
The second half of the exhibition is devoted, amongst other things, to club football and delves into the history and origins of the Bundesliga. Here you’ll encounter legendary players and managers who have shaped the course of events in Germany’s top flight over many years. A look at the all-time league table shows you how dominance in football is subject to constant change. You’ll hear commentators’ voices and relive emotional highlights from the Bundesliga radio commentary. You’ll encounter ‘Viktoria’, the trophy awarded to the German champions between 1903 and 1944. And whilst searching for records and statistics from Bundesliga seasons since 1963, statistics enthusiasts can delve into the extensive media archives. The blend of experience, information and curiosities paints a multi-faceted portrait of the Bundesliga.
Our exhibition appeals to football fans just as much as it does to people interested in social issues, politics, culture and history. We attach great importance to contextualising football within its sporting, cultural, social and historical settings, whilst linking the contemporary experiences of young visitors with the perspectives of earlier generations.
Winning the World Cup in 1954 was a tremendous feeling for many in post-war Germany, which was then divided. Federal President Joachim Gauck also recalled this during the presentation of the Silver Laurel Leaf to the 2014 World Cup-winning squad at Bellevue Palace. In football, Gauck said, the memory of being one nation had always remained alive during the division of Germany. Read more
