20 November 2015 – 13 December 2015
“25 Years of German Football Unity” – this was the title of the first special exhibition to open at the German Football Museum in Dortmund on 20 November 2015. A total of eleven themed displays commemorated the sporting events of the years marking the political transition, looked back at inter-German football matches during the era of a divided country, and highlighted developments over the past two and a half decades in a reunified Germany’s football scene. The centrepiece of the exhibition was the Trabbi, atop which, on 21 November 1990, the then presidents Hans-Georg Moldenhauer and Hermann Neuberger sealed the reunification of the two German football associations with a handshake on Leipzig’s Augustusplatz.
“25 years of ‘German football unity’ provide an opportunity to take stock,” said museum director Manuel Neukirchner, “even if the outcome is mixed.”
Whilst, for example, the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany symbolises a new, positive form of patriotism that has certainly helped to foster the country’s internal unity, the traditional clubs from the East continue to struggle to establish themselves in the top German leagues.”
One of the first visitors to the special exhibition was Dariusz Wosz. The former international is one of only seven players to have represented both the GDR (7 matches) and reunified Germany (17 matches) at international level.
The special exhibition was open to visitors at the German Football Museum until 13 December 2015.
